AFRICAN POSTAL LEADERS' INDIA TOUR
Postal leaders from Africa (Postmasters General and Chief Executive Officers) from English-speaking countries undertook a study tour in India from June 21-26, 2024, to observe how India is transforming its postal technology and serving its citizens.
The tour, organized by the Universal Postal Union, was funded by the United States Postal Service in collaboration with India Post through the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) program.
Representing the Tanzania Postal Corporation was Ms. Esther Epaphra, Director of Finance and Planning, who stood in for Postmaster General Mr. Maharage Chande.
Ms. Esther was accompanied by Mr. Michael Njau, Director of IT, and Mr. Elia Madulesi, Head of Communications and International Postal Affairs.
The tour, which began in Mumbai and concluded in Delhi, aimed to exchange experiences with these leaders in management and technological systems as well as postal operations. In Delhi, the leaders witnessed various transformations being undertaken by India Post, many of which could be implemented by African postal services.
Other leaders present on the tour included those from South Africa, Botswana, Cameroon, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
In their closing remarks, the leaders expressed their gratitude, stating, “These trainings were very important for African postal leaders as the environment in India is very similar to that of African countries.” They thanked the leadership of India Post and the UPU for facilitating the tour.
